    The Onion AV club rightly called this for what it is: a lame-ish stab at Andy Kaufmanism that is fooling a great deal more people than it should:

    (It’s worth watching the last 5 seconds of the full clip, where we briefly see Phoenix taking off his sunglasses and talking to Letterman normally, which basically betrays the gag.)

      Even if it is a gag, it’s still sad. And that makes it pretty counterproductive. There are loads of pretentious art-conceptualists out there and they aren’t making any money either.
