America! Eff Yeah!

We did it. We actually did it.

This is the first time in my entire life that I am proud to be an American and so proud of what the collective country accomplished together. When I was in high school, I read Jefferson’s original political essays which inspired the Declaration of Independence. I learned the principals by which this country was originally founded and I cried because we had not been upholding them for a long time. We strayed even further from those principals with the last 8 years. I had honestly begun to think that we would never take a step back toward that place.

Last night I cried again. But they were tears of joy. Things are looking up, my friends. Last night we forewent the overcrowded Stranger election party for the Nite Lite, which is one of my absolute favorite bars in Seattle. There was plenty of room, drinks are always cheap, the lighting is warm and inviting, and it was Tamale Tuesday (2 tamales plus beans, rice and a PBR for $6!)

I sat at a table with expats from red states. Iowa, Ohio, North Carolina, and Virginia (me). But last night those red states turned blue. (Well, at least North Carlina is getting there. We also had a California, a Vermont/New Hampshire and some native Washingtons but those guys are always blue.) And then Obama was declared the president elect and the entire bar cheered and clapped and then the crowd hushed and we watched McCain concede. There were some boos, especially when the camera cut to Palin, but for the most part we saw, not bitterness, but relief in the eyes of John McCain. He doesn’t want this mess. He has no idea where to begin. But Obama does. President Obama does.

When Obama delivered his victory speech, we all knew we were watching something iconic and historical. Not just because we were looking at the first black president, but because we were looking at a man who is completely right for the job and who wants to help everyone out of the blackness. His speech was amazing: humble, confident, funny, serious, inspirational, emotional and highly quotable.

“The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even one term, but America – I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you – we as a people will get there.”

For the first time I understand why people have pictures of the president in their homes. I want a framed picture of President Obama on my wall. I want to listen to him address the nation as our president for as long as possible.

The Sound Transit expansion prop passed. The parks improvement prop passed. Death with Dignity passed. Tim Eyeman’s jerkface prop DIDN’T pass. Dino Rossi ISN’T our new governor. It’s getting better, man.

The one fly in the ointment is that California’s horribly backward Prop 8 passed. But surely that sort of bigotry can’t last, can it? (Clearly, I’m feeling a lot more optimistic all of a sudden.)

When we left the bar people we found people celebrating in the streets. Horns were honking. Our African cab driver talked excitedly to us and then to his friends on the phone. He honked his horn and shouted “YES WE CAN” out the window. None of us minded being stuck in traffic. We were just keeping the party going.

On Capitol Hill, the police closed off the streets and let people dance and hug and revel. I wanted to revel too and now kind of wish I had instead of going home. But we were tired. It’s been a long, dark journey to get here. And now that we’re here, it’s time for everyone to get some restful sleep. Especially President Obama. He’s gonna need it more than anybody.

NFT Radar: the Tin Hat

Simply put: the Tin Hat is a Ballard hipster bar. But it’s not hipster in that annoying, competitive way. It’s hip because it just is, from the front room to the bathrooms. The menus are all printed with retro design covers. There is plenty of velvet art. There are diner-style signs everywhere boasting cheap eats and they mean it too. There’s pinball and a fun movie playing silently on the TV to fill in the rare awkward silence that might crop up (or even to distract you from a conversation… even the most engrossing discussion can be disrupted by the sight of killer dolls or Patrick Bateman’s chainsaw phallus). The music is a mixture of hipster favorites and unpretentious pop. Sometimes spun by a DJ, other times a house playlist, they will play a rare Husker Du track, but are not above tossing a Squeeze song on right after. Everyone can feel welcome here, and the cheap happy hours make it even easier. And no need to put off breaking the seal here. Both the men’s and women’s restrooms are full of visual goodies like pinup girls, old cigarette ads and Tom Selleck in a speedo. It’s square to be hip!

NFT Radar: Pizza Pi

I have been a vegetarian for 16 years. In that time I have never gone vegan for one reason: Cheese. There’s just no suitable substitute. There are acceptable soy versions of milk and rice versions of ice cream. But that orange nacho sludge at 7-11 seems more real than any vegan cheese I’ve ever had, even realer… than cheese itself. So a vegan pizzeria is a risky venture. Of course vegans will love it. They will claim it tastes “just like pizza” the way I claim grilled Portobello mushrooms taste like steak. But they are meaty and flavorful and that’s good enough for me. The Pi chefs certainly know how to make delicious food. Their rustic crust recipe, the basis for most menu items, is salty and satisfying. Their topping options are wonderful (though they inexplicably include pineapple in everything). If you have bad impressions of the place, blame the old owners. The new ones know that you have to keep regular hours. But if you’re not vegan, and like cheese, this isn’t for you. If, however, you just like good food, forget the whole pizza concept and just enjoy the menu for what it is.

NFT Radar: Amazing Thai Cuisine

When one Thai restaurant falls, another takes its place. Or so it goes in Sea-Town. Pawinee Thai became the auspiciously titled Amazing Thai Cuisine under new owners, but in this case it was definitely an improvement, rather than a replacement. I was feeling lazy one day and called Pawinee for delivery. Amazing Thai answered, but all I heard was “Thai.” I was a couple of dishes into my order before we both realized what had happened. There I was with no menu and a house full of hungry Thai enthusiasts. But the man on the phone was kind enough to suggest things based on what I had wanted to order and still brought it to my door. He also brought me FIVE menus for some reason. But I’m happy to have them. This menu is huge. It’s got all the old standby dishes plus a few surprises like the Puff Omelet, Grilled Salmon, Pineapple Curry and something called Ultimate Fried Rice. It’s not the best Thai I’ve ever had, but it’s good enough to be called Amazing. And if I don’t have to cook or put on pants, that’s good enough for me.

NFT Radar: Neptune Coffee

If you thought coffee shop culture in Seattle was stagnant, you obviously haven’t been to Neptune Coffee. Nestled conveniently in the Greenwood main drag, Neptune Coffee is resurrecting the coffee shop as a destination, rather than a stop on the way to something cooler. It’s owned and operated by a friendly chap named Dan who really understands customer draw and retention. During the day, take advantage of the free wi-fi and comfy, lap top oriented seating arrangements. Order a delicious fresh, hot panini sandwich to accompany your coffee. In the evening, take in some entertainment. They have the old stand-by events like open mic nights and art shows, but they also have something infinitely hipper: Trivia Theme Nights. Recent themes have included Twin Peaks, Arrested Development, the Big Lebowski and Futurama. The entry fee proceeds go to various neighborhood charities and non-profits and the winning teams take home spoils in the form of fun related paraphernalia. I know this first hand because the winning team at Futurama night featured yours truly. Why yes, I AM bragging. But trivia night would not be complete without perhaps the most ingenious idea for a coffee shop yet: Alcohol. Two-fist your latte with bottled beer or a glass of wine. Everybody’s happy!

NFT Radar: CrazyCherry

CrazyCherry (formerly the lawsuiterific CrazyBerry), is the frozen yogurt of the future. I admit I was skeptical at first. They have only two flavors, one of which is “plain.” The other is “green tea.” “What’s all this crapery?” I wondered. “I’m on board with the Green Tea but what kind of fascist establishment calls ‘plain’ a flavor? What are my topping options? Rice and water?” But since I’m a girl who loves her some fro yo, I decided to give it a whirl. Much to my surprise, there is nothing plain about the “plain.” It’s sweet and delicious with tangy kick. The “green tea” doesn’t disappoint either. But, as I soon learned: CrazyCherry ain’t about the flavor of the yogurt. It’s about the TOPPINGS! Their vast array is not limited to the moniker-alluded berries. They carry the traditional delights like sprinkles and oreo crumble, but they also offer unique (and magically delicious) toppings like Captain Crunch, marshmallows and mochi balls (Ha! Rice IS a topping). Once you’ve chosen a topping trifeca kick back in a smooth futuristic orange plastic chair and contemplate the white orb lights dangling from the ceiling whilst scarfing down your personalized, moderately healthy yogurt creation. The future is now.

Get Apolcalyptic This Monday!

Do you like drinking, laughing and partial nudity? Don’t even act like you don’t. I know you people. And Monday, September 15th is your lucky day because the first installment of the new series of the hit variety show, Get Loweded, is coming to the Rebar! It’s hosted by Jackson Lowe, a man who looks suspiciously like Chas Roberts of Tough Guy Mosh fame. And the new series is something really special because it’s regarding something we all need to know about: The Apocalypse!

It’s a glimpse into our inevitable future in which gas is a rare and precious resource, people make dubious fashion choices and history is revisionist and cobbled together from patchy memory by a group of traveling gypsies who will steal your wallet…and your hearts. But they will leave you with entertainment and drink specials.

Featuring music, comedy, disrobing ladies, the Andy Kaufman of the future and TriviaBots.

$8 or a gallon of precious precious petroleum gets you in the door. Here’s a flier:

Also featuring yours truly as the Assistant Production Manager and Arsenio as the Robot!

NFT Radar: The Redwood

I’m not sure what it is with hipsters and hunting themes but it seems to work. The Redwood nails Log Cabin chic with wood paneling; antler lamps and burlap animal targets abound. But unlike a Linda Dershang bar, this place skews more animal-friendly than carnivorous. Vegetarian meatloaf sandwiches, vegan chili burgers, sweet potato fries and yes, some real dead cow as well. And there’s more. You’ll only pay backwoods prices for your cocktails and they’ll throw in free peanuts to boot (go ahead and toss those shells on the floor). However, while you may feel like you’re drinking in the Appalachians, don’t forget to use your indoor voice, even when you’re outside smoking. The neighbors will call the cops on your city slicker ass. For serious.

NFT Radar: Blue C Sushi

It may not be the best sushi in Seattle, but it’s definitely the best conveyor belt sushi. Blue C is all about instant gratification and they have it in spades. Once seated, it won’t be but a second or two before something delicious passes before your eyes. And what variety! They got the standards like the California Roll. The salmon and eel rolls are especially competent. You can’t go wrong with any of the tempura rolls from the shrimp to the tofu. Vegetarians rejoice, because unlike most conveyor belt places, you don’t have to special order an animal-free dish. If you’re lucky, they’ll have the delectable V8 roll, stuffed with crunchy veggie tempura in an avocado blanket and doused with hot sauce. Otherwise, the plain old Kappa Maki and Inari are good enough to satisfy. Be sure to grab a potato dumpling hot plate or pickle salad to share. Save room for a cream puff but take small, easy bites lest you squirt cream filling on your date. It’s crowded around dinner time, but with no waiting for service, the turnover is quick. Enjoy a cocktail or sake in the upstairs bar while you wait.

NFT Radar: Shorty’s

If there is a heaven, I imagine it is a lot like Shorty’s. Here, a pocket full of quarters will buy you an evening in their pinball room full of old favorites like Medieval Madness and Monster Bash, plus more recent nerd fare such as The Lord of the Rings and the new Indiana Jones game. Yes, it references that silly crystal skull, but it also has mini replicas of the Ark of the Covenant, the Holy Grail and a Sankara Stone (What? It’s COOL!). When you tire of flippers and plungers, trade them in for buttons and joysticks and kick it with Mario or destroy some asteroids. But this isn’t just an arcade time capsule. There is also plentiful booze and hot dogs (both veggie and mystery meat) which will energize you enough to return to your alien-battling mission. If you’re feeling tropical, try one of their “Boozie Smoothies”, a slushie-like beverage that’s rumtastic. It comes with an umbrella. That swell secret bar in the back is available for private party rentals too. Man, I love this place.
