Paid in Puke S10E3: Ready or Not

On season 10 episode 3 of Paid in Puke, we’re playing with Matt Betinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s 2019 horror comedy, “Ready or Not” starring Samara Weaving, Andi McDowell, Adam Brody, and Mark O’Brien. It was written by Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy. Olpin and Gilette also joined Busick for “Abigail”, the 2022 Scream reboot, and “Scream VI“.

“Ready or Not” tells the story of Grace, a plucky woman from a modest background, who learns, on the night of her wedding to the heir of a board game empire, that she must play a life-or-death game of Hide and Seek with her new in-laws.

It’s Keggers with Kids all this episode, as Amy’s child, Dash, joins us to talk about why this is one of his favorite horror films, and how it stacks up against Betinelli-Olpin and Gillett’s other films.

The “Ready or Not” script is a rare example of tight perfection, symmetry, and depth that also manages to walk a horror comedy tightrope. It belongs to a fun micro-genre: Evil People in a Mansion.

We also praise Samara Weaving for the fun vibe she brings to her scream queen role, Adam Brody’s recent renaissance, and why we’ve been on the Brody train since David Wain’s underrated comedy, “The Ten”.

Film Review: Promising Young Woman

I can’t stop thinking about Batman. The protagonist/anti-hero of Emerald Fennell’s divisive debut feature, Promising Young Woman, has so much in common with Gotham’s most famous resident. Cassie Thomas (Carey Mulligan, An Education, Drive) is haunted by the loss of a loved one. Her anger regarding the violence of that loss consumes her to the point that her entire life revolves around taking elaborate, non-lethal retaliation against the portion of the population she deems responsible (mostly CIS, straight, white dudes). As such, her life has stalled. She is incapable of getting close to anyone. She leads a double life. By day she works at her friend’s coffee shop and dresses in youthful pastel florals. She pretends to be OK. But after dark, she dons her costume: rumpled black and white business suits and carefully smeared YouTube tutorial makeup. She hunts the bad guys with an elaborate ruse and then teaches them a harsh lesson.

Cassie has a pretty good system going, too. She feigns blackout drunkenness in order to capture the attention of “nice” guys who want to make sure she “gets home safe.” They inevitably bring her back to their place and wait for her to “pass out.” Once they’re holding the smoking underpants, she breaks character and launches into a lecture on consent. In the morning, she records her encounters in a color-coded journal wrapped in a scrunchie. Though she never explains the key, there are clues to cracking it. Some names are black, some are blue, and some are red. It has something to do with how they respond to her ruse. We never see a red encounter, but there’s no way she’s come out unscathed every time. There are so many names. Page after page of tally marks. Lest we forget the incident that led us here…

25 Stars You Had No Idea Got Married In Secret

It’s the great irony of weddings. Though technically, the betrothed couple is entitled to get married their way, it’s hard to keep others from asserting themselves into the big day. It goes double for celebrities who can’t even go to a restaurant without someone bothering them.

Unfortunately, it’s the intimate moments that make for paparazzi gold. If the star is big enough, their celebrity wedding is practically a national holiday. Every so often, a star will manage to keep their wedding on the DL. It requires strategy and careful planning, and it doesn’t stay secret for long. But if a Hollywood power couple can score a few hours of scrutiny-free matrimony, more power to them.

The stars on this list all did the impossible. Keeping the paparazzi away wasn’t the only motivation for some of these celebrity couples to get married on the sly. In some cases, they didn’t want their parents there either. Others just wanted to sign the paperwork without a big to-do. Stars who have been divorced often go smaller-scale for their second wedding. It’s quite an accomplishment when a star manages to announce their marriage on their own terms (which usually means a cheeky Instagram post).

Hammer to Nail Review: Sleeping with Other People

(The 2015 Seattle International Film Festival started May 14 and runs all the way until June 7. Keep an eye on HtN for several reviews like this one, the latest from Writer/director Leslye Headland).

Writer/director Leslye Headland’s Sleeping with Other People is a Rom-Com that exists in the space between sincerity and satire. It’s hard to top Headland’s own description: “When Harry Met Sally for assholes.” But if you were truly an asshole, you’d be annoyed by the film’s frequent moments of earnestness. Moreover, fans of that saccharine, genre-defining film might have trouble empathizing with Headland’s deeply flawed protagonists. With its sexual implicitness, casual swearing, and unabashed recreational drug use, Sleeping with Other People is more akin to the films of Judd Apatow and Nicholas Stoller than to Rob Reiner…
