NFT Radar: Solo Bar

X-Posted from Not For Tourists.

The menu at Solo Bar is like one of those games in Highlights Magazine. How many nationalities can you spot? Italian, French, Spanish, Ethiopian, Brazilian and Bulgarian…to name a few. Solo calls itself a tapas bar, which means just that: fancy food in small portions. Not that I’m complaining. With reasonable prices and daily happy hours from 5-8 (plus all day on Sunday and Monday), the punk rock owners (local Balkan band Kulture Shock and ex-Faith No More) provide numerous ways to fill my vast American stomach with outstanding fare. At Sunday brunch, wash down their historical figure-themed crepes (let them eat The Antionette) with Guinness infused (trust them) bloody marys and the biggest mimosa you’ve seen outside my kitchen. For dinner, share a Mediterranean plate or eat that entire gourmet hot sandwich yourself. Their specialty cocktail menu includes Brazilian favorite, caipirinha, and a drink named after Deadwood’s beloved badass Al Swearengen. On the weekends, chase your old timey libation with a rock show.

I Was Robbed. Literally.

I was in Park City, UT at Sundance after having watched a full day of White Guilt films when I got a voicemail from Brugos. He said he had some bad news. He wasn't exaggerating. My first thought was that something had happened to Tobe so it wasn't THAT bad. But even though everyone I love is still OK, it still sucks to get robbed.

I freaked out a little bit and decided to fly home early. I knew I wouldn't be able to get my mind off it at Sundance and there was so much to do now. If there was any hope of catching these guys, we'd have to turn the police report in ASAP, so back to Seattle I came. Part of me really wanted to stay at the festival. Those Film Threat guys are so much fun and Bill Pullman was there somewhere. But most of me wanted to wrap my arms around Brugos as soon as possible and then start sifting through the wreckage.

Brugos came home from work on Friday but stayed in the front room for a couple of minutes, straightening up from poker the night before. When he went into the kitchen, he saw that the window and back door were open and there was a pile of DVDs on the floor, leading him to believe that the perpetrators were still there when he arrived home. Immediately, he understood what happened and called the police. Not surprisingly, they weren't much help. Our officer didn't really look for fingerprints (though he found a partial print on the window) even though they should be all over the place. They opened every drawer in our bedroom. There should be some on the back door. There should be at least one or two. But no, Chief Wiggum was more interested in the hookah we had in the corner, from which we have never smoked anything but hookah tobacco. Thanks, officer.

I think that the assholes were probably scoping out the neighborhood beforehand because they knew to park in the Mormon parking lot on Friday during work hours. I guess one of our windows wasn't properly latched but I'm not sure if they would have left us alone if we hadn't had a window open of if they would have broken a window to get in. Either way, in they came and this is what they took:

-My Mac G4
-My Dell monitor
-2 external 1TB hard drives (containing our music and pictures)
-All of the cameras they could find
-My jewelry boxes
-Half of my DVD's
-Papers, bills, checks and bank statements

At first glance, I thought perhaps they would be pretty disappointed with their haul. My mac was 5 years old and I didn't really own any expensive jewelry. Just some sentimental stuff. There were actually several rings in there from VENDING machines. Most of the cameras they took were broken in some way. One of them was a VHS camcorder that once belonged to my dad…in 1988. This thing weighs, like, 20 pounds and the battery won't hold a charge. I wish I could be a fly on the wall when they tried to sell that. As for my DVD's, that was where the real money was. They took a lot of British imports and limited edition DVD's and when I totaled up all the ones that were missing, 61 DVDs came to a $2100 value. Of course, these are all second-hand now so I don't know what the resale will be, but buying them back (if I decide to do so) will not be cheap. Luckily, Brugos has homeowner's insurance. For some reason, they also felt the need to take EVERY ARTICLE OF MY CLOTHING from both the closet and the my dresser and throw it on the floor in a pile. I feel like they could have stolen more if they hadn't taken the time to be such dicks about messing up my room.

Of course, we have canceled all of our credit cards and changed our banking information etc. They had to know we would do that right away. Maybe they thought they could do a little shopping before we came home. They may have thought we were out of town because we had our recycling out early.

We're definitely going to be beefing up security around here, including putting curtains on all the windows on the first floor. I never noticed before, but you can see really well into this house if you walk around the whole thing. I hate that they have contributed to my increasing fear of living in this city. First the woman who died on New Year's Eve and now this. It's just stuff, of course, and I don't know if they were armed or what they would have done if they'd come across a person in the house. I don't really have anything profound to say about it either. Just that it happened and it sucks but I suppose it could have been worse.

I Would Like to Adopt Michael Cera Pls. Thnx.

Another fun one from MarkTapioKines

1. Do you think castration could be a fair punishment for sexual/violent criminals?
Yes, definitely. And they should also find a way to give them urinary tract infections. Those things are hell.

2. Is your real name also a .com that you own and control?
Yes. JessicaBaxter.com. It just links to this blog though.

3. What's your general opinion of rock star Tom Petty?
Some of his songs are catchy and I kind of enjoy them when I hear them but I never seek him out.

4. Name a well-known song you hate by a well-known band (or performer) you like.
“Blister in the Sun” by the Violent Femmes. I've just heard it too damned much.

5. Name a well-known song you like by a well-known band (or performer) you hate.
“Free Bird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd

6. What Beatles song would you be happy to never hear again?
“The Long and Winding Road”. Long and winding indeed.

7. What is your favorite nut?
I do love a cashew. Particularly if they are honey roasted.

8. What percentage of Catholic priests do you think are actually gay?
90%.

9. When you get a mass email from a friend, do you ever check out the other email addresses on the recipient list?
Yes. Is that wrong?

10. Would you rather go for one month without access to your email account, or one month without access to a cell phone?
Cell phone. I am not a fan of being on the phone in general and I actually conduct most of my plan-making via email. I imagine if I could tell people I wouldn't have my phone for a month, they would know to email me. Plus, I wouldn't have to listen to my mother's monologues for that long.

11. Would you rather be ridiculed for something you purposefully did, or be falsely admired for something you know you didn't do?
Ridiculed for something I purposefully did. I'd either be proud of it and not feel the need to defend myself or I'd have learned a valuable lesson. Nothing good could come out of false admiration and taking credit for something you didn't do.

12. We're halfway through January 2008. Is there anything new you've done in 2008 that you've never done before?
Voluntarily purchased a ton of vitamins. Usually, my mother would force them on me.

13. Have you eaten in any restaurants this year that you have never eaten in before?
Yes. I ate at Serious Pie on Friday. It was quite delicious. Now, what, prey tell, do you think their little logo man has caught on fire.

14. Been anywhere in 2008 where you've never been before?
We went to the future location of our wedding ceremony. It was a part of Discovery Park that I have never visited. That is a big park.

15. Who do you hope becomes president in 2008?
O'Boy Obama. If Clinton gets the nomination we are screwed for another 4 years because there are way too many voters who have personal vendettas against her for her to get elected.

16. What do you usually eat and/or drink for breakfast?
I waver between oatmeal with a cut-up banana and instant grits. Both with tea. On the weekends, it's often some sort of egg with veggies and toast combination.

17. What are you most annoyed at your mother about?
Not being able to get through a single conversation with me without saying something disparaging about my father.

18. What are you most annoyed at your father about?
He could have been slightly more tactful with my mother.

19. If your house had to go without gas, water or electricity for 48 hours, what would you choose to go without?
I'd go with electricity. I could go to a movie to entertain myself. Not taking a shower makes me grumpy

20. Finally, how are you doing so far on your 2008 goals/resolutions?
Fairly well. I was keeping up with my exercise regiment until I got sick yesterday and I've been eating pretty healthily. I didn't overdo it booze-wise over the weekend either. It's early days yet and I'm about to go to party-central, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

Freedom Costs a Buck-O-Five

Tom Cruise, Scientologist cannot go on vacation until he's converted each and every person on the planet using a whole bunch of acronyms, his creepy cackle and the hypnotic drone of the Mission Impossible theme.

More Proof that Garfield is Actually Brilliant

By now I'm probably made each and every one of you sift through the existential madness that is Garfield comic strips minus Garfield's annoying thought bubbles. Well, today, I'm spreading the love for Lasagna Cat. Each of these live re-enactments of Garfield comic strips are followed by a music video tribute to the strip we just watched. I may not be literally LOLing, but I am definitely LOLing in my soul.

Sunset Finally Sets

This time there really is a wolf. It has been confirmed that the Sunset Bowl and Lounge in Ballard has been sold and will close in April. This is, of course, HORRIBLE news. I will miss their eccentric staff, their 24-hour bowling madness, their DDR machine, their wacky drink specials and, most of all, their 40,000 song, 5 night/week karaoke. In the meantime, I plan to visit as much as possible over the next 3 months. I suggest you do the same. If you've never been to this amazing Ballard staple, now is your chance. Your last chance.

I don't know what stupid plans the new owners have for the space but even if it's not more effing condos, it's still not going to be a suitable substitute. Of all the Old Seattle businesses that have been closing of late, this is definitely the most tragic.

This is How I Feel Today

I Resolve to Resolve

I am not comfortable making New Years resolutions in general because I feel like it is a way to make excuses NOT to do something. (e.g. I will quit smoking…AFTER the New Year). If you want to change something about yourself, why not just start right away? That said, the end of one year and the beginning of another does bring about personal scrutiny. There are some things that have come to light for me lately that I would like to change and I am starting now. I won't call them resolutions. But I will put them in list-form because that is a method that usually motivates me.

Starting now, I will:

*CONSUME LESS CRAP. This means drinking less and eating less bad food. This includes saying no to the 2am nacho or french fry. If have only had a drink or two at 2am, I will certainly be less inclined to want the nacho.
*EXERCISE MORE. I have always been pretty good about doing something exercisey every day, but I haven't been very good about cardio since winter hit. I will do more cardio. 3 times a week, at least, I will DDR. Dance Dance Revolution is actually a good means of getting cardio, unlike Wii tennis, which seems to only work out your right forearm. My right forearm is my only muscle that doesn't really need a workout.
*PAY CLOSER ATTENTION TO MY POSTURE. I've seen my shoulders hunched in pictures lately. I've never had great posture but it seems to have gotten worse. I need to pay more attention to where my head and shoulders are at any given moment. Feel free to correct me if you see me slumping. I may say “Thanks, mom” but, like most motherly advice, I know it will be for my own good.
*STRETCH. My back is getting worse. I really need to get back to yoga class. But barring that, I know the yoga positions that will make my back feel better. Lying on the couch in front of the TV isn't one of them.
*LISTEN TO MY BODY. If my body feels really horrible after a night of drinking sugary drinks, I shouldn't rinse and repeat the following Saturday night. If I am full but really want to eat that last quarter of delicious burrito, I SHOULDN'T eat that last quarter of burrito. The pain in my stomach will be worse than my sadness over wasting a quarter of a delicious burrito.
*DO EVERYTHING IN MODERATION. This will become my new mantra. It should help with everything else on the list. Feel free to remind me of this the next time you see me ordering my 6th drink on a Tuesday.

I will not:
*Let Seasonal Affective Disorder be an excuse for not doing something I know I should do (as in everything on the above list).

HAPPY 2008!

Be Careful Out There

I am pretty disturbed by this story in the Slog about a woman my age who was stabbed in my old neighborhood on New Years Eve for seemingly no reason.

Few new details have emerged yet in the sad story of Shannon Harps’ death, except a rather scary-looking sketch of a “person of interest” in the murder, released by police earlier today. (The sketch of the “person of interest” matches the description of the suspect police released yesterday). Representatives from the Sierra Club, where Harps worked as an associate regional representative promoting the Cascade Chapter’s Cool State campaign, have not returned calls for comment.

Friends and coworkers we have talked to, however, describe Harps as a quiet, mild-mannered young woman who was a little shy but who had a great sense of humor once you drew her out. Harps worked for the Sierra Club for at least eight years—first in Columbus, Ohio, and then in Seattle, where much of her job involved signing cities up for the Mayors’ Climate Protection Agreement, in which cities agree to voluntarily reduce their greenhouse-gas emissions. “It’ll be a terrible loss,” says Sierra Club Cascade Chapter chair Mike O’Brien, who worked closely with Harps. O’Brien describes Harps as thoughtful and helpful—always the first person to show up at events to help out and the last person to leave after cleaning up. “She was just a really good person… just very positive and uplifting,” O’Brien says.

Marc Conte, a friend of Harps who worked with her in the Club’s Columbus office, says Harps was always supportive and positive, even when victories were few and far between (as they frequently were in Ohio.) She never got mad or raised her voice, he says, even during heated debates. “Some take an adversarial approach but Shannon rose above it. People on ‘the other side’ of an issue were her opponents, not enemies. She might have disagreements with those folks but never arguments…”

Harps moved to Seattle about four years ago to work at the Sierra Club. She was stabbed by a bearded, “scruffy-looking” man, according to witnesses, outside a condo building on 15th and Howell, where she had lived for two years, and died of injuries to her upper chest and abdomen before paramedics could get her to a hospital. She had planned to meet up with friends for a New Year’s Eve party, and was just heading back from Madison Market with groceries when she was attacked. Police haven’t yet said whether they believe the killer was someone Harps knew, but an SPD spokesman did confirm to the Stranger that police are interviewing co-workers to determine whether the man was connected to the Sierra Club. Meanwhile, police have increased patrols in the area around 15th and Howell. O’Brien says he can’t imagine anyone targeting someone like Harps for a random attack; however, the alternative is equally unimaginable. “It doesn’t make sense,” O’Brien says. “If it’s not random, then who the hell would want to target someone like that?”

I still know quite a few people who live on Capitol Hill, some of them RIGHT IN THAT AREA. Ladies (and gents too, for that matter), if you don't already own some pepper spray, please buy some. A friend of ours has been giving us girls nice sharp butterfly knives for our birthdays over the past year. I'm thinking now might be a good time to learn how to use it.
